Commentary

The Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was instructed in the previous verse that He should treat the Believers cheerfully and it was commanded: Do not keep any dealing connection with those, who want to be great and are haughty in the intoxication of their wealth and property, even that they wish not to sit along with the poor and insolvent people. You have admonished them, what You desired. Turn away from them now, if they do not hear. And convey the good news of Allah’s Forgiveness and Mercy to those poor people, who come unto You, act upon Your Sayings happily after listening, and admonish them the teachings of Islam and Holy Qur’aan.

The Duty of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has been expounded in this verse more clearly and commanded: Say to these despotic and haughty people who are like Pharaoh and Haman! I have not come in the world for your flattery that I would do according to your instructions and regard your willingness. Neither have I any greed from you and nor I desire any service from you. I observe that your desires are just like animals. I shall renounce from the Straight Path, which Allah Almighty has shown Me, if I too follow your desires, and will go astray in the dark like you. Take a thought now in the meanings of this verse.

It is commanded! Say {O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)} to these stupid people who do not hear your Sayings: My wisdom and that Light, which Allah Almighty has produced in My Heart by Inspiration, does never permit Me that I begin to call your gods like you leaving Allah Almighty, worship them and ask them for boon. These are your self-made, false and deceiving words. Your evil desires have compelled you to accept them. I would not have to follow your desires. I shall also go astray if I shall follow your sayings giving up the Revealed Instructions by Allah Almighty, and then there will not be any sign of the Straight Path.

It is known very clearly from this verse that the Spiritual Guides should never flatter the rich and effectual class of the people. Moreover, the Truth should be spoken out clearly, inconsiderate, unhesitatingly and without any partiality. They should be made courageous who believe in the Truth, whether they are poor and insolvent, and the religious teachings should be taught to them. The Provider of everything to everyone is only Allah Almighty and the entire are indigent of His only, then why should not everything be begged from Him, only He must be obeyed and His consent be gotten. You cannot obey Him if you follow someone else.

Poor people were slaves of the rich - Quran Chapter 6 – 54 & 55 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-819) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 6 – 54 & 55 (Pt-7, Stg-2) (L-819) - درس قرآن

Poor people were slaves of the rich

Surah ‘Al-‘An-‘aam (Cattle) – Chapter – 6)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Here we should stop awhile and think upon that, what would we have to learn from which had been being described in the previous verses. At the time of revelation of these verses, the rich people of Makkah had laid down terror on the poor and insolvent people, and it was a way to put the society that the standard of honor and nobility had become the wealth and property. The rich people wished to keep the other people under their control duly pressed and drive them in accord with their own command. Condition of other countries outside the Arab was worse than them. All human beings were actually slaves and maids of the rich and rulers. They used to use them entirely like animals and consider: Pleasure and comfort is only our right, because we have all things like wealth, property, dignity and magnificence.

Therefore, entire people are our servants. They should move on our signals and accept that thankfully, whatsoever we give them for eating and drinking, wear that dress, whichever we provide them. In the Arab, this condition was a little less than other parts of the world, however it was.

The aim of Islam was to establish the equality among the entire humankind, so it was incumbent to lead the people in such a way in the beginning that tyranny and oppression is eradicated and every human being may reap the advantage from the blessings of the world to the extent of their necessities. And all the people help him collectively in fulfilling his requirements. None should consider any other person lower in rank and nor anyone should be insulted or hated.

It has been instructed to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): You have not come in the world to serve the rich and haughty people, so you should not favor them of any particular sort. Allah Almighty has fixed the standard of nobility, sincerity of the heart and being thankful to Lord Almighty. These etiquettes can be in the poor people too, so say them never ‘get out’, if they come, thinking: what would be of Islam; Islam will be honored in the world if the wealthy people will embrace It. “We have not set the respect of Islam depending on any particular class of the people. Moreover, We have made Islam the source of respect for the entire human beings”.

If the poor people will bow towards Allah Almighty and will be His grateful servants, then they will be certainly honored due to Islam i.e. Islam is not needy of the mankind for own respect, but the humankind are indigent of Islam for getting real honor.

We would have to learn from this lesson that we should never determine the wealth and property as source of nobility and respect. Islam has not determined collection of wealth as our mission. Those people who have been running behind collection of the wealth, they have been spoiling the society. That person or group of such people is enemy of the humanity, who desires to collect much wealth and wants to become owner of luxurious things of the world itself, and wishes other people to work on the emphasis of his wealth, agreeably to his desire.

Moreover he is not an independent mankind. He is a slave of his mean wishes. Original face of Islamic Society is to console, sympathize and desire of pleasing one another mutually. Say every person, who is seen first “’As-Salaamu- ‘Alaykum” (Peace be unto you). Saying these words to anyone is a declaration of this wish, “I want to see you healthy, happy, in ease and comfort”. Then this sympathy should be proved in the form of love and sacrifice with own dealing.

Commentary

Haughtiness and vainglory of the infidels was described in the previous verse that they do not like even to sit near the poor people. There is no such mankind’s heart-breaking thing more than it that he is considered as humiliated, and the person, who considers himself a humiliated, is also like him “a human being” in all respects, who insulted him. Wealthy people of Makkah used to consider themselves superior to the poor and insolvent people in their hearts as well as they used to say them “Of Low Status” also face to face by their tongues recklessly. This is a very big fault to insult and hate anyone. Certainly they, who were poor but faithful to Islam, used to grieve extremely.

Therefore, the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has been instructed particularly that those people (the poor) should be satisfied and consoled, and pleased with glad tiding that they have deserved Mercy of Allah Almighty after embracing Islam. Even that whoso of them commits evil through ignorance and repents afterward thereof, then he will be forgiven. Allah Almighty knows the condition of their hearts and intention that intentionally they do not disobey their Lord Almighty. So their mistake and error is excused and their penitence is accepted.

Now, let’s take a thought in the summary of this verse. It is commanded: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! When those who believe in Our Revelations come unto Thee, welcome to them with good prayer and say: “Salaamun ‘Alaykum” (Peace be unto you), then cause to hear them happy news, “Your Lord has prescribed for Himself Mercy, that whoso of you will commit any sin through ignorance (because a believer does not do so intentionally) and repent afterward thereof, Allah Almighty will forgive him on his repentance. You will find Him as a Forgiving, Merciful on apologizing and promising that you will not commit the evil in future.

Then Allah Almighty says: As you see, We expound the Revelations. It is importunity of Our Grace of Mercy and Guidance, and it aims that the way of the evildoers and wicked people may be separated totally from the good, and there should not remain any doubt among the both ways.

Commentary

It has been described earlier that the people of Makkah were inordinate in the intoxication of wealth and property. They used to disregard everyone. Islam considers that any kind of boasting or pride is useless. Entire human beings are equal in Islam. It teaches that the entire human beings should live like brothers of one another mutually having equal rights, but it was against the rules and customs of the people of Makkah.

Therefore, they denied sitting socially along with the poor and lower class people, whenever they used to come unto the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). He (peace be upon Him) thought for awhile: If these haughty people embraced Islam, it will affect entire Arab and all the people will embrace Islam.

So the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) wished to prevent the poor and lower class people sitting every time in His company, only for the purpose that the rich and honorable people may come unhesitatingly unto Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and listen to His Sayings (peace be upon Him), and probably; the way for Islam may be opened.

It was forbidden in the previous verse and the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was commanded: Islamic Morality cannot permit it that the proud and haughty people are welcomed, while the poor and lower class people, who are fond of hearing the teachings of Islam and act upon them, are prevented from coming unto You (peace be upon Him) and disheartened.

It has been described in this verse: We have kept difference among their dignities, made some of them rich and some poor for causing to know all of them a big Truth, and explain that: It is not necessary that a man becomes a complete mankind after achieving higher rank, wealth or property, whereas at the other side, meaning of being a poor is that he is totally like dead and gone, morally he can never be a good person (God preserve us).

Virtue, Superiority and nobility depend on the heart’s cleanliness and ethics. By being a rich person of anyone, it is not incumbent that he is also good in morality and humanity. The door of becoming a virtuous is not closed due to being a poor. This aim has been mentioned very clearly in this verse.

It is commanded: As you observe that some people are rich and some poor, it is only a way of mankind’s test. Being a wealthy person is not sign of acceptability in the Court of Allah Almighty. He can favor the poor also by bestowing to him purity and faithfulness. Even that the rich people can be surprised by observing them: Whether Allah Almighty can exalt these poor, unreal, weak and helpless people leaving us?

They should understand that Allah Almighty knows more than you to those people who are well-mannered in His Gratefulness. Therefore, He sends down His Gifts and Honors upon them, so that you may get freedom from this misapprehension and vain imagination that the wealth and superiority is the best thing.

52.  And repel not those who call upon their Lord at morn and evening, seeking His Countenance. Thou art not accountable for them in aught, nor are they accountable for Thee in aught, if you were to repel them then you will be of unjust.
52.  Wa  laa  tat-rudil-laziina yad-‘uuna  Rabbahum  bil-gadaati  wal-‘a-shiyyi  yuriiduuna  Waj-hah.  Maa  ‘alayKa  min  hisaa-bihim-min-shay-‘inw-wa  maa  min  hisaabiKa  ‘alay-him-min-  shay-‘in  fatatruda-  hum  fatakuuna  minaz-zaalimiin.

Commentary

The impostures of the people of Makkah were described in the previous verses and it seemed also that the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) desired, “Somehow the esteemed and rich people of Makkah should listen to Me (Muhammad)”. He would have also thought: Would that I could show them those portents, which they demand, then perhaps they might believe.

To remove that conception, Allah Almighty commanded: If You can, seek a way down into the earth or a ladder unto the sky, so that You may bring unto them a portent (to convince all of them), even then they will not believe because they desire some other thing. And Suppose! If they believed after observing any strong portent, then such belief will not be acceptable to Us (Allah Almighty).

Allah Almighty Says: We desire! They should believe by thinking themselves and observing Our existing portents, which We have already sent down in the world. But their ears, eyes and tongues (all) are closed from these portents. Neither they will see those portents, nor hear any Guide and nor they will ask from Someone themselves.

Therefore, it has been commanded to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Give up thinking about them. Your only Duty was to convey Our Message, which You have performed. If they do not hear, let them go. Now You should warn them who are ready to hear.

These were such poor people who embraced Islam, believed in the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and had become ready to obey the commands of Holy Qur’aan; for instance BilalAmaar bin Yasir and Saalim (May Allah be pleased with them) etc. Honorable people had this pretense that they used to say the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): We cannot sit along with these poor people.

The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) had been prepared to prevent those poor people from meeting every time, so that the objection of the proud people may remain no more and perhaps they would come, hear and believe. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has been forbidden by Allah Almighty in this verse from doing so.

Allah Almighty commands: you should never repel those people from sitting with You (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), who call upon their Lord at morning and evening, try to seek Allah’s Countenance. You don’t know the condition of anyone’s heart that whether the poor people are well or these haughty people will be good after believing, because anyone cannot be responsible of any other’s secrets. So you should treat the people according to their apparent condition. You should cause to hear those people, who listen and believe. But don’t keep dealing connection with those who remain in own haughtiness. Neither You are accountable for them in aught, nor are they accountable for You in aught.

Gathering unto the Lord

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

51.  Warn hereby those who fear (because they know) that they will be gathered unto their Lord, for whom there is no protecting ally, nor intercessor beside Him, that may ward off (evil).
51.  Wa  ‘anzir  bihil-laziina  yakhaa-fuuna  ‘any-yuh-sharuuu  ‘ilaa  Rabbihim  laysa  lahummin-  duuniHii  waliy-yunw-wa  laa  shafii-‘ul-la-‘al-lahum  yattaquun.

Commentary

It was delineated in the previous verses that, which doubt these people have in your Messenger-hood, is not for the reason that they are in search of the Truth, but they feel their work as spoiled, if they believed in the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). They demand miracles for believing and hurt the Messenger of Allah Almighty with their likewise behavior.

There is no hope of their coming towards the Straight Path. If they had any intention to understand the Truth, certainly they would have known by taking a little thought that the Messenger and Prophet (peace be upon Him) is a Mankind. He does never claim that He possesses the treasures of Allah Almighty, nor that He has knowledge of the Unseen; and nor that He (peace be upon Him) is an Angel. He is also a Man from the Mankind, Who has extremely superior beauties and Who is guided by means of Divine inspiration and He (peace be upon Him) acts according to the Revelations, and invites the people to act upon Them.

Allah Almighty addresses His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Let them do now as they wish, while they do not understand after causing to know them entire these things. And cause to hear and understand the Holy Qur’aan to those people who are ready to reap advantage from It.

Allah Almighty commands that those people who fear that they will be gathered and set before their Lord Almighty on a Day (the Day of Resurrection), there will be no protecting ally, nor any intercessor for them at that time, each one will be for oneself, everyone will be dealt personally by one’s Lord about one’s deeds. None will be one’s supporter or helper beside Him.

These people can reap advantage from the Guidance of Holy Qur’aan. This Word of Allah Almighty will cause to know them: It is compulsory for success in the Court of our Lord that we should obey strictly His Commands today in the world, pass our lives in His prescribed limits, do every that work, which pleases Him and give up all such deeds, which are forbidden by Him. It is called piety and fear of God Almighty. Those people who ward of evil can become Sobers and Temperate.

It was commanded in the second verse of Chapter -2 (Baqarah): Zaalikal-Kitaabu  laa  rayba  fiih.  Hudal-lil-Muttaqiin {This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a Guidance unto Those Who ward off (evil)}. It has further been explained in this verse about it that, only that person has ability to be a pious, who fears Allah Almighty and wards of evils. Think before you commit – Whether is it right or wrong? For such people, this Word of Allah Almighty is a Spiritual Guide and a Conductor.

Commentary

It has been being described with effect from the previous verses that those people who do not want to obey the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), they make evasions. Sometimes they say: If you are a Messenger; show us done as we say. At another time they ask: When the Doomsday will come? Again at any other time they argue:  In what manner is He a Messenger, who moves in Bazaars and do works like common people?

Opposite to all of them, the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has been advised to be patient and commanded: The ancient people also used to treat those Messengers (peace be upon Them), who were sent before You in the same manner. Actually, main reason of these people is the same, which was of those before them that they desire to maintain their own way of life and do not wish any changing in that particular way (which leads them to stray).

They do not want to understand the Truth. Moreover, base of their entire deeds is stubbornness, obstinacy and refractoriness. Even then, actual work of the Messengers (peace be upon Them) has been mentioned in this verse in clear words, so that the wise people may understand the reality.

It is commanded: Say (O Muhammad, to the disbelievers):

1.    Neither had I claimed ever and nor now claim that I possess the treasures of Allah Almighty; I shall provide you, what you will demand.

2.    Nor I have knowledge of the Unseen;

3.    And never had I said to you that I am an Angel and am free from the worldly necessities. I am also a Mankind like you.

There is a difference to such extent among you and Me (Muhammad – grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) that the Divine Revelations come unto Me, in which I am guided about that, what I would have to do. So, I follow only that which is inspired in Me. However, it does not mean that I have not remained a Mankind.

But the thing is only that there is a difference between human beings. (Which you can observe that someone is more wise, while the other is less, someone can see the matter deeply, whereas the other person cannot observe the thing near to him). Someone is blind while the other can see clearly. This is the only difference between you and Me (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) that I have been caused to understand those things which are not known to common people. Meditate in it deeply; it is not any such thing which is difficult to understand.  You can know it easily if you use your sense in this matter properly.

Commentary

Behavior of the infidels of Makkah was described in the previous section that they used to demand any such portent from the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), observing which, there might not remain any doubt that really He is Messenger. Allah Almighty addresses: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! Do not grieve from their objections. They have insulted Our Revelations by falsifying Our Messenger. They will suffer due to these kinds of deeds. We certainly sent Our Messengers (peace be upon them) unto those peoples that were before You and they used to tease Them (peace be upon Them) by telling a lie in such manner. Like them, these people also boast upon their wealth and property. But nothing will be useful for them out of these things and they will be annihilated like them too.

Allah Almighty says in these verses that there is no other reason to send the Messengers (peace be upon Them) than that as bearers of good news and warners for the entire people. Then those people, who believe and do good works, good news are for them. There shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. But those who deny the verses of Holy Qur’aan, falsify Our Revelations and demand particular portents for evading, they should be warned as: The torment will afflict you for your disobedience.

It is known clearly from this verse that the Messengers (peace be upon Them) are sent by Allah Almighty to convey His Message. That Message is: You should do only those works, which are permitted by Allah Almighty, and do not do those works, which are forbidden by Him. This is the Way to get rid of fear and grief. The name of that person will be registered in “the Disobedient”, who did not care this Law of Life and will suffer from rigorous punishment of disobedience.
