Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ 10

10.  And We have established you in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks.
10.  Wa  laqad  makkan-Naakum  fil-‘arzi  wa  ja-‘alNaa  lakum  fiihaa  ma-‘aa-yish.  Qaliilam-maa  tash-kuruun.

Commentary

MakkanNaa – (We have established), it is a past tense, origin of which is Tamkiin and it has been derived from Makaan. Makaan means “the place of living, house, station, abode, residence, nest etc.” Tamkiin means “to make room for, to provide place for living, to settle, to establish. It means “to make someone owner of any station too”.

Ma-‘aa-yish – (livelihood), it is plural of ma-‘iishatun, which is an adverb from ‘iish‘Iish means: to live, to dwell, Ma-‘iishatun means “source of living, useful commodity, livelihood”.

From the beginning, it was being described in this Chapter that this Scripture has come as a precept for you. You should obey Its Commands and should not obey any other against it, because the disobedient have been punished before you and have reached recompense of their evil done, and they will be retreated on the Day of Judgment too, and the Messengers (peace be upon Them) will say all: We had conveyed Our Message unto them. Now You know better about them. After this discussion, the procedure of knowing the Lord Almighty has been explained before the mankind in this verse.

It is commanded: Consider thoughtfully! Who established you in the earth and made you too much powerful? Verily Allah Almighty established only, before Whom everything is bowing. Produce the claim if anyone has any against Him, so that he may prove his claim, but first of all, none has any power to sue such claim, however if anyone claimed stupidly, he will be ashamed and will get a drubbing, because he cannot produce its proof.

Listen! We have established you in the earth and produced many things useful for you and made you their owner and with them your entire needs of life are fulfilled. After giving you all such things, We made you king of the world (viceroy of Allah). It is your first duty that you should be thankful to your Generous and Benefactor. But it is observed that mostly you do not thank Him, and if ever you are thankful, that is a little and fictitious.

The aim is that the human being should think - looking his own dignity in the world, that, Who provided all this? It is the duty of his sense, and this wisdom is sufficient for him, which has been given to some animals also. The animals recognize that person, who gives them food and drinkable, and looks after them, and they serve him at their own as much as they can. From many of their works and signs, it can be known clearly that they recognize their master and feel thankful to him.

The mankind has more sense and wisdom than that, which is ordinarily held with the animals. It is not meant indeed that he becomes dead and gone even more than the animals in recognizing and being thankful to his Benefactor, and even does not understand that: I should be thankful to my Benefactor from all sorts and I should obey His every Command.

In fact, they are many wise people among the human beings, who recognize their Creator, Master and Lord very well, but so much sense has been given to all, with which they can know well efficiently that: None in the world can be my creator, who may give me so much power and strength and who may produce everything, which is necessary for me to live (except Allah Almighty). Certainly there is Someone Superior to the world, Who created me and gave me all these things. I should be thankful to Him only every time.
