Disobedient and disbelievers will suffer

Surah ‘An-Nisaaa’  (Women) – Chapter – 4)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

41.  But how (will it be with them) when We bring of every people a witness, and We bring thee (O Muhammad) a witness against these?

42.  On that Day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that the earth were leveled over them, and they can hide no fact from Allah.
41.  Fa-kayfa  ‘izaa  ji’-naa  min  kulli  ‘ummatim- bi-shahiidinw-wa  ji’-naa  bika  ‘alaa  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  Shahiidaa.

42.  ‘Yawma-‘iziny-ya-waddul-laziina  kafaruu  wa  ‘asa-wur-Rasuula  law  tu-sawwaa  bihi-mul-‘arz.  Wa  laa  yaktumuu-nAllaaha  hadiisaa.

Commentary

Shahiidun – (witness), the words shaahid, shahaadat, shahuud, mash-huud, mushaahidah etc. and many other likewise words have been derived from the same origin. In the meanings of this word, presence and evidence of someone are hidden. The witness is called Shaahid and Shahiid because he observes the particular event in his presence and knows its circumstances very well.

‘Alaa  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  Shahiidaa – (a witness against these people). In the beginning of Part – 2, the Muslims were described as “ye may be witnesses against mankind” (shu-hadaaa-‘a  ‘alan-naas) and the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) as “the Messenger may be witness against you (the Muslims)” (verse # 2:143). Moreover, in this verse, “and We bring thee (O Muhammad) a witness against these” (wa  ji’-naa  bika  ‘alaa  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  Shahiidaa) has been mentioned. That is to say, the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) may be witness against the entire nations and folks of
the world. All previous nations, Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) are included in the meanings of haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i.

Allah Almighty commands that a witness will be present against each nation in the Day of Resurrection. They (peace be upon them) will give evidence about the deeds, character, faith and infidelity of their people. In addition, last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) will give evidence about the truth of those Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them). And he (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him) will give evidence too about the behavior of their nations, which those nations upheld with the Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them).

On the Day of Reckoning, there will be no form of rescue for those who disbelieved in Allah Almighty and disobeyed their Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon them). They will not be able to hide anything despite their thousands of vain attempts. They will wish in this condition of confusion and repentance (regret and shame), “Would that! The earth were cracked, we were caused to enter in it and it leveled over us so that we could get freedom from this torment”.
