42. Listeners for the sake of falsehood! Devourers of
what is forbidden. If then they have recourse unto thee (Muhammad) judge
between them or turn aside, from them, and if you turn aside from them, then
they cannot harm thee at all. But if thou judgest, judge between them with
equity. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable.

Commentary
‘A’-riz –
(turn aside), Its origin is ‘A’-raaz, which has been made
from ‘arz. ‘Arz means “towards, side, direction”, ‘A’-raaz Means
“to turn a side, to fall back”. It aims “to deny from listening to
someone”.
Lany-yazurruuka –
(they cannot at all harm you), it is from zarar, which means
“injury, detriment, anguish, harm, loss, to hurt, to damage”.
In the previous lesson, the
circumstances of the Jews and the Hypocrites were being described that those
people wish to remove the restrictions of the religion, because in the
infidelity, they get opportunity of fulfilling their desires, and do, what they
wish to do with the diabolical freedom.
Now it has been described that,
these are the people, who hover around you to know your secrets. They have
formed this habit “to find faults into you”, and since that they are unable to
find any fault, so they wish to show your virtue as a fault, which cannot be
without telling a lie. Therefore, their purpose of listening to you is that
they may tell a lie. They are liars of a far off grade. Besides this, unlawful
has licked up them. They snatch the right of someone else by pressing and reap
advantage from the weakness of the weak, poverty of the poor and necessity of
the needy as demanding of bribe, lending money on interest and compelling
someone into service with or without pay etc. in short, they do not care, where
they feel their worldly advantage.
O Messenger (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon Him)! If these people have recourse unto You
with their cases or law-suits, then it depends on you, either judge between
them after hearing the case or turn aside, from them. If they are enraged, you
should not worry, they cannot at all harm you. But if You are going to judge,
then you should judge among them with equity. Allah Almighty loves the
equitable. You should not put the justice behind, whether they agree to Your
judgment or otherwise. We knew from it that whosoever has recourse unto Muslims
to solve any matter of justice, they should judge between the opposite parties
with equity.
