The things which are lawful

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ مَاذَآ أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ قُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتُ وَمَا عَلَّمْتُم مِّنَ ٱلْجَوَارِحِ مُكَلِّبِينَ تُعَلِّمُونَهُنَّ مِمَّا عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّآأَمْسَكْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱسْمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ (4 

4.  They ask thee (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say: (all) good things are made lawful for you; and those beasts and birds of prey which ye have trained, ye teach them that which Allah taught you; so eat of that which they catch for you and mention Allah’s name upon it, and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Swift to take account.
4.  Yas-‘aluunaka  maa  zaaa  ‘uhilla  lahum.  Qul  ‘uhilla  lakumut-tayyi-baatu,  wa  maa  ‘allamtum-minal-jawaarihi  mukalli-biina  tu-‘allimuuna-hunna  mimmaa  ‘al-lama-kumUllaah;  fakuluu  mim-maaa  ‘amsakna  ‘alaykum  waz-kurus-mAllaahi  ‘alayh.  Watta-qUllaah.  ‘InnAllaaha  Sarii-‘ul-Hisaab.

    Commentary

Jawaarihi - (trained beasts and birds of prey). Those trained animals, which attack suddenly on the prey and seize it.

Mukalli-biina – to let the trained beast or bird go upon the prey after showing it.

Tu-‘allimuuna – (you teach), it is from ta’-liim. Here it aims, “to teach any hunting beast or bird for catching the prey”.  

In the previous verse, forbidden things were expounded. Then some people asked, “What is lawful for us now? Moreover, whether the prey caught by hunting dog or hawk etc. is lawful for us or not?” This verse was revealed to reply them that except the forbidden things, all good things are made lawful for you. However, any unlawful method should not be used to acquire them like gambling, lottery or usury, because method of getting many good things makes them unlawful.

After that, following proper course of hunting the prey through hunting beasts and birds pointed out:

1.    The hunting beast or bird should be taught properly for hunting. It should keep the prey safe for you instead of eating the prey itself.  

2.    It should not run itself to catch the prey, but you should let it go to catch after showing the prey.

3.    To discipline it, should be so influenced that it should not eat the prey itself; and if it is called back, it should come back on your commandment.

4.    Say the name of Allah (recite BisMillaah) upon the hunting beast before letting it go to catch the prey. There is one more condition in addition to these i.e. the hunting beast should wound the prey, so that some blood of the prey is flown, and if it did not wound the prey, then it is necessary to sacrifice the prey yourself. If the prey died before catching and you could not sacrifice it, then it has become polluted, forbidden and impure. It is compulsory to keep it in mind that cause of letting everything to go should be fear of Allah Almighty, therefore; you must observe your duty to Him. He is Swift to take account.

There is no one in the world who may harm Islam

 ٱلْيَوْمَ يَئِسَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن دِينِكُمْ فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَٱخْشَوْنِ ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْوَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمَ دِينًا فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ فِى مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لِّإِثْمٍ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (3b  

3b.  This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This Day have perfected your religion for you and completed My Favour unto you, and have chosen for you as Religion AL-ISLAM. Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin; (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
3b.  ‘Al-yawma  ya-‘isallaziina  kafaruu  min-diinikum  falaa  takh-shaw-hum  wakh-shawN.‘Al-Yawma  ‘ak-maltu  lakum  Diina-kum  wa  ‘at-mamtu  ‘alaykum  ni’-maTii  wa  raziiTu  lakumul-‘ISLAAMA  Diinaa.  Famaniz-turra  fii  makh-masatin  gayra  mutajaa-nifil-li-‘ismin,  fa-‘innAllaaha  Gafuurur-Rahiim.                

    Commentary

Ya-‘isa – (despaired), this word is from yaas, which means “hopeless and despair”. It aims that now; they have become hopeless from the Muslims that they would renegade from Islam and return to their parent religion. 

Laa  takh-shaw-hum – (do not fear them). It has been derived from the word Khashyah, which means ‘fear, dread, terror, fright and awe’. From it, the word wakh-shawn has come out, which means “Fear Me”. Alphabet letter “n” at the end of the word wakh-shawn discloses that actually this word was wakh-shawNii. It shows that the letter “ii” has been deleted but the meaning “Me” would remain the same.

‘Uz-turra – being distressed, it is from ‘iztaraar, which means ‘to be helpless’. Having any determined necessity to be fulfilled without further delay is called ‘iztaraar. 

Makh-masatin  - (hunger), another word for hunger in Arabic language is “Juuu’ “.Mutajaa-nifin – this word is from janaf, which means ‘to bow, to submit, to agree, to associate with’. Here it aims, “A person, who inclines towards a side with his will”.

It has been described in this verse that the disbelievers used to hope, “when the Muslims would observe that they have to do many works of hard nature, many things have been forbidden for them from eating or drinking, of which they were habitual, and worship and Jihad have been prescribed for them, then certainly; they would renegade from Islam and adopt their previous religion, and they will become like us”. Today, this hope of theirs has broken. They will never be able to harm Islam. It is the Decision of God Almighty.

At that time, the Muslims were passing satisfied life. Makkah had been conquered. The entire Arab had embraced Islam. It had become easy to obey the Law. The Rules had been established for every matter/problem. Therefore, during the Last Hajj, it was proclaimed in the Field of Arafat very clearly, “This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion”. Now they will never be able to tempt the Muslims towards disbelief. The Muslims should forget their fear from their hearts. They should fear Allah Almighty only. He commanded, “This Day have perfected your religion for you and completed My Favour unto you, and have chosen for you as Religion AL-ISLAM”. It has proper solution of your every difficulty and guidance in accordance with every occasion.  

After that, Muslims are being guided that if they are forced by hunger and they feel dying without food, then they can take some food from the forbidden, only such quantity, with which they may live. It will not be sin for them.

That which is an abomination

 حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَيْتَةُ وَٱلدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ ٱلْخِنزِيرِوَمَآ أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦ وَٱلْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَٱلْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَٱلْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَٱلنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَآ أَكَلَ ٱلسَّبُعُ إِلَّا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ وَمَا ذُبِحَ عَلَى ٱلنُّصُبِ وَأَنتَسْتَقْسِمُوا۟ بِٱلْأَزْلَٰمِ ذَٰلِكُمْ فِسْقٌ (3  a  

3a. Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine-flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye have slaughtered still alive, and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye apportion by the divining arrows. This is an abomination.
3a. Hurri-mat ‘alaykumul-maytatu waddamu wa lahmul-khin-ziiri wa maaa ‘uhilla li-gayrIllaahi bihii wal-mun-khaniqatu wal-maw-quuzatu walmuta-raddi-yatu wannatii-hatu wa maaa ‘akalas-sabu-‘u ‘illaa maa zakkaytum; wa maa zubiha ‘alan-nusubi wa ‘an tastaq-simuu bil-‘azlaam. Zaalikum fisq.

    Commentary

Hurri-mat – (forbidden), its origin is tah-riim, which has been derived from Haraam – means – the thing, from which it is necessary to be saved, that should never be used. The aim of “to be saved” is “due to respect and honor” also as well as “not to be used”. Here it signifies that the things which have been forbidden (for food) in this verse, those should not be eaten/taken. Those things are:

1.    Carrion – (the dead animal, carcass and dead putrefying flesh), that beast, which has died naturally, not by slaughtering still alive. Flesh of such animal is forbidden because its blood has dried into its body.

2.    Blood – which flew from the body, whether that has come out after slaughtering or due to any other reason, that blood is impure and eating it is forbidden. Moreover, eating the carrion is even forbidden due to the reason that the blood of that dead body is absorbed in its body. It is compulsory to cause to flow the blood of animal being slaughtered, so that the flesh may be purified and lawful.

3.    Swine-flesh is impure and it is forbidden (for food).

4.    That animal, which has been dedicated unto any other than Allah Almighty. Whether this animal has been slaughtered and its blood has been flown, even then it is forbidden to be used.

5.    The animal like Mun-khaniqatunmaw-quuzatunmuta-raddi-yatun and natii-hatunhave been forbidden. These are the animals, which have not been slaughtered but died due to suffocating, through beating, falling from a height and which have been killed by the goring of any other beast’s horns. These all are included in the dead. But because there was a common custom in the Arab to eat them, therefore those have been described by name separately.

6.    The animal, devoured of wild beasts is also forbidden for food. However, if it was still alive and you slaughtered, then it is lawful to use it for food. 

7.    That animal, which has been sacrificed in the locality of idols, although it has been slaughtered in the name of Allah Almighty, even then, it is forbidden. The locality of the idols is the place, where any self-fabricated idol has been standing and the people worship it. It was general tradition in the Arab to sacrifice the animal at such place and used to be taken as rendering the idol its due. It is part of above-mentioned serial -4. However, sacrificing it was a specific method, therefore, it has been described separately.

8.    At the end, a particular form of gambling has been forbidden, which was in vogue in the Arab. That is, “Thoughtless young people of the Arab used to catch and slaughter the camel of any person, then they used to make pieces of its meat and keep them separately. After that, they used to distribute those portions of meat through arrows. Any a figure was written on every arrow, but some arrows were kept without numbers. Every person used to go and bring one arrow, and then he was given portion of meat according to the number of arrow. Those persons, who used to bring numberless arrow, they were not given any piece of meat. Moreover, they were bound to pay the price of the entire animal”.

Many commandments have been given to the Muslims in previous two lessons. Some of them are for special occasions and others are common. Two commandments out of the common; need special attention of the Muslims. The entire badness of our society can be driven away if these two rules are followed. No depravity of the society could be produced in to us if these principles continued also afterwards to be acted upon likewise earlier. But alas! We disregarded them and now the result of our negligence is before us. Those two principles are:

1.    Ta-‘aawanuu  ‘alalbirri  wat-taqwaa – (help one another unto righteousness and pious duty).

2.    Wa  laa  ta-‘aawanuu  ‘alal-‘ismi  wal-‘udwaan – (And help not one another unto sin and transgression).

We have been listening the words “ta-‘aawan and laa ta-‘aawan” (Help and do not help) since long. Let’s understand their meanings today, as the meanings, which have been described in the Holy Qur’aan.Ta-‘aawan means to help one another and laa ta-‘aawan mean ‘not to help one another and turn face. It has been told in this verse, “in which matters, you should help others, and which is the occasion where you cannot help others”? It has been decided in two sentences where, there is no room of any doubt. That is to say; help one another unto righteousness and pious duty, and help not one another unto sin and transgression. Birr means righteousness and Taqwaa means ‘to escape from evil deeds. We should help one another in these two matters. ‘Ism means sin, evil, and ‘udwaan means transgression upon someone. We should never help anyone in these two matters. If it is said in clear words, you can take it as, “Help the good people in their good deeds and do not go near the evildoers, nor help in their evil deeds”.

Those all deeds come under the heading of Birr, due to which the people gain. Taqwaa is fear of Allah Almighty. The act due to which any person is punished either in the world or on the Doomsday or at both places, is called ‘ism. ‘Udwaan means “to effect one’s purpose by pressing the weak than oneself”.

The Form of Ta-‘aawan. The entire people should assemble at any place and devise mutually that, “We all shall help him collectively, who will work for betterment of the public and escape from the sins”. And the form of laa ta-‘aawan is the decision by all people, “We shall break off all connections collectively with him, who will do evils and press the weak”. After establishing in such a manner, it is impossible that anyone might do evil or attain one’s object by pressing the weak.   

Now everybody should think, “Are we not doing against the above-mentioned principles”? If this condition is maintained as it is, then entire world will suffer at last. Good people will expire gradually by pressing and the bad will be living in the whole world. When it would be so, then the entire world will ruin and everything will be finished.

Surah MAAA-‘IDAH (The Table Spread) – Chapter – 5)

وَإِذَا حَلَلْتُمْ فَٱصْطَادُوا۟ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَـَٔانُ قَوْمٍ أَن صَدُّوكُمْ عَنِ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ أَن تَعْتَدُوا۟ وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَىٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِيدُ ٱلْعِقَابِ (2  b  

2b.  And when you have laid aside Ehraam, then go hunting (if ye will). And let not your hatred of a folk who (once) stopped your going to the Inviolable Place of Worship seduce you to transgress; but help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. And help not one another unto sin and transgression and keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Severe in punishment.
2b.  Wa  ‘izaa  halaltum  fas-taaduu.  Wa  laa  yajri-mannakum  shana-‘aanu  qawmin  ‘an-sadduu-kum  ‘anil-Mas-jidil-Haraami  ‘an-ta’-taduu.  Wa  ta-‘aawanuu  ‘alalbirri  wat-taqwaa,  wa  laa  ta-‘aawanuu  ‘alal-‘ismi  wal-‘udwaan.  Watta-qUllaah.  ‘InnAllaaha  Shadiidul-‘iqaab.

    Commentary

Halaltum – (you have laid aside Ehraam), the things, which had become unlawful and forbidden to be used after tying Ehraam, now have become lawful. 

‘As-taaduu – (go hunting), now gaming has become lawful for you after your coming out from Ehraam, if you wish. 

‘A’-taduu – it has been derived from ‘ud-waan, which means ‘act of seducing’. 

’Atta-quu – it is from taqwaa, which means ‘keeping duty (to Allah), remaining away from the evil’.

In the previous verse, hunting of wild animals was forbidden in the form of Ehraam. After untying Ehraam, now it has become lawful to hunt. It is known very clearly from the afterwards Instructions that ‘how a best method is taught by Islam to the Muslims to treat other people’. First portion of this verse, which has been recited and explained in the previous lesson, guides, “Treat with respect the months of Hajj, do not prevent the people, nor molest them who come for performing Hajj or pilgrimage of the Inviolable Place “Ka’-bah” and preserve their collard animals (of sacrifice). The people of Makkah used to accept also these affairs, but their enmity so increased with Muslims that when they reached Makkah from Madinah for Pilgrimage (Umrah) of Inviolable Place (Ka’-bah), then the Infidels ignored all these instructions and prohibited the Muslims from entering into Makkah Mu-‘azmah. To be excited by Muslims was a very little and common thing. Therefore, at first those commandments were ordained, which have been determined necessary for performing Hajj and Pilgrimage (Umrah), so that the Muslims should care. And it has been described very clearly that you should neither violate nor commit any such crime, as the Makkan people did due to their enmity with you. Keep your every person off from boiling up. They should respect the sanctity of the Monuments of Allah Almighty and do not cross the limits.
