94. And We sent no
prophet unto any township but We did afflict its folk with tribulation and
adversity that haply they might grow humble.
95. Then changed We the
evil plight for good till they grew affluent and said: Tribulation and
distress did touch our fathers; then We seized them unawares, when they
perceived not.

Commentary
Ba’-saaa-‘a,
Zar-raaa-‘a and Sarraaa-‘a – these all three words
are nouns of the same weight, which have been derived from the words: ba’-sun (tribulation), zararun (adversity
and distress), and suruurun (gladness).
‘Afaw –
{(they) grew affluent}, it is past tense, which has been made from the
word ‘af-wun. ‘Af-wun has many meanings as: to forgive, to be
removed, to rise, to be promoted, to increase and to grow etc. in this verse,
the last meaning has been taken, that is to say; their condition became so good
that they grew, put forth blossoms and developed in population and prosperity
very well.
It has been commanded in these
verses that: In which townships, We send Our Prophets and Messengers (blessings
on Them) for the guidance of the people, first; We send afflictions,
tribulations and distresses on the people of that place. After that, there is
rife of prosperity and abundance. The people begin to say: This keeps on
happening in the world. Even sometimes prosperity and sometimes plight used to
come on our ancestors too. Then, We seize them suddenly and at that time,
neither they perceive, and nor aware of the disaster.
Purpose of sending the Prophets
and Messengers (blessings on Them) is that the people should incline to Allah
Almighty and know their Creator. Along with the verbal advice to those people,
changes in the circumstance undergo also.
The tribulations surround. The
aim from it is to cause to understand that you should supplicate in the Court
of God Almighty at the time of afflictions that He may put the calamities away.
Then relief is granted, so that the people should be thankful to Allah Almighty
and incline toward His worship.
When in both
conditions, the people neglect and become careless from the commands of
Prophets and Messengers (blessings on Them) that: Fear Allah Almighty and
worship Him. Moreover, they begin to say: It is rule of the world. Our
forefathers used to live sometimes prosperous and sometimes impoverishing too.
What is its relation with God? In such condition, torment of Allah Almighty
descends on them suddenly.
