Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)
77. So they hamstrung the she-camel, and they flouted the
commandment of their Lord, and they said: O Salih! Bring upon us
that thou threatenest if thou art indeed of those (from Allah).
78. So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them
prostrate in their dwelling place.
79. Then he (Salih) turned from them and said: O my
people! I delivered my Lord’s message unto you and gave you good advice, but
ye love not good advisers.

Commentary
‘
‘Aqaruu –
{They (hamstrung, cut tendons of the thighs to make she-camel lame)}, it is
past tense, which has been derived from ‘aqar (to cut the
heels), at first the feet of camel are cut, then it is killed with the spear
from its chest and it falls down immediately.
‘Ataw –
{they (flouted, mocked, sneered)}, it is past tense also and has been derived
from the word ‘atuw-wun. ‘Atuw-wun means “to disobey, to
rebel”.
Rajfatun –
(earthquake), actually it means “to move or shake severely, to tremble). Here
it aims “earthquake”. That was very severe earthquake and before it, there was
a sound of thunder.
Jaasimiin –
(fallen prostrate), this word is plural of jaasim, which has been
derived from the word jasuum. Jasuum means “to fall down on
the ground being helpless”.
It is commanded that the
chieftains of the tribe of Thamud did not care for the
Commandments, conveyed by Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him)
and hamstrung the she-camel and disobeyed the Order of their Lord and then said
to their Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him) with insistence: We
have done our work. Bring upon us now that from which you threaten if you are
indeed a Messenger.
At last, a very severe
earthquake came and a sound like loud thunder was heard along with it. Those
disobedient people fell prostrate on the earth in their houses in such a way as
the quadruped animals put their mouth and neck on the ground at the time of
sleeping.
Prophet Salih (peace
be upon Him) left that place being sorrowful on their condition and disclosed
His sorrow in these words: O my people! I delivered your Lord’s message unto
you and left no stone un-turned to give you good advice. But you did not
recognize the value of your good advisers.
