152. And Allah verily made good His promise unto you
when ye routed them by His leave, until (the moment) when your courage failed
you, and ye disagreed about the order and ye disobeyed, after He had shown
you that for which ye long. Some of you desired the world, and some of you
desired the Hereafter. Therefore, He made you flee from them, that He might
try you. And yet certainly He hath forgiven you. And Allah is a Lord of
Kindness to believers.

Commentary
Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) had
described the Muslims before starting of the war in the battlefield of ‘Uhud,
“If you will have patience and remain steadfast, then you will get victory and
obtain the mastery over the Infidels. Allah Almighty made good His promise in
the beginning of the battle”. The Muslims stretched many heaps, by slaughtering
the unbelievers with the Command of Allah Almighty. The Idolaters began to run
away from the battlefield being stunned.
When the Muslims felt that they were
succeeding and getting victory, they broke in for collection of the spoils of
war (the wealth of plunder). In the meantime, the archers committed a serious error
by disobeying the command of the Messenger (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam). When Khalid
bin Waliid observed that the hill-pass was without archers, he reaped
advantage and within a few moments, the map of the battle was changed.
The archers began to quarrel with one another.
Some of them said, “We should stay here” but others told that there was no more
need to stay there. We should also collect the spoils of war”. At last, their
maximum strength left the pass and went away for collection of the spoils of
war. Then suddenly the Idolaters attacked from behind that pass. On the other
side, the news regarding execution of the Prophet (SallAllaahu ‘alayHi wa ‘AaliHii Wasallam) became
notorious.
Because
of these entire circumstances, the weakness was born in the hearts of the
Muslims. Resultantly, this cowardice arose. Some people inclined towards
worldly wealth and property with pleasure, consequence of which was that they
all suffered. The Infidels, who were running away recklessly; leaving the
battlefield to save themselves, returned and broke in upon the Muslims. Then
the Muslims were running away themselves. The matter inverted because of this
shortness, mistake and error. It was also a test of the Muslims, so that the
difference between immature and matured Muslims may be disclosed.
