144a. Muhammad is but a Messenger, messengers
(the like of whom) have passed away before him. Will it be that, when he
dieth or is slain, ye will turn back on your heels?

Commentary
Ancient nations
formed their Spiritual Guides, Reformers, Prophets and Messengers either as God
or son of god, and deemed them higher than the mankind. Islam has determined
the actual status of the Messenger in Kalima-tush-Shahaadah, “’Ash-hadu
‘allaaa ilaaha ‘illAllaahu, Wah-daHuu, Laa sha-reeka
laHuu, wa ‘ash-hadu ‘anna Muhamma-dan ‘Abdu-Huu
wa RasuuluHuu” (I bear witness that verily there is no God but
Allah. He is the One, None is Partner with Him. And I bear witness that verily Muhammad
is His ‘Abd (Servant) and His Apostle. (He is neither God, nor
Son of God, nor the Incarnation of God). There is no priesthood in Islam, No
rituals, no formalities of baptism.
After producing this
basic principle of Islam in the above-mentioned verses, it has been signified
towards an important event of the Battle of ‘Uhud,
which is as under:
In the battlefield
of ‘Uhud, Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him) prepared a map for war personally. After setting the rank
and file in order, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) observed
that one pass of the hill of ‘Uhud had remained unsafe. The
Army of enemy could attack the Muslims from behind that pass. Prophet (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) detailed fifty archers to stand on the
pass, appointed ‘Abdullah bin Jabiir
(may Allah be pleased with him) as their leader and urged them also, “You
should remain standing on this place and leave not your position. Even if you
observe that the winged creature are pinching and eating the flesh of our Army,
even then you would not have to leave your place”. Messenger Muhammad (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) commanded, “Till the time you will keep
your footing at this place, we shall remain triumphant upon the enemy”.
The battle began. A
furious war was fought. Crusaders of Islam were showing advantage of manliness
and bravery. The Idolaters of Quraish were not able to find
any path except running away from the front of the fearlessness of Abu
Dajaanah, Ali and other Crusaders of Islam. Allah Almighty fulfilled
His promise. The Infidels suffered a defeat. They began to run away. The Muslim
soldiers began to collect the enemy’s property and assets in possession
(booty).
When the bowmen of
the hill-pass observed this scene, they considered that “the Muslims have
succeeded. Now staying here (at the pass of the hill) is useless and avoidable.
We should pursue the enemy and take our share from the booty. Their leader Abdullah bin Jabiir (may Allah be pleased with him) reminded them
dictation of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), but
the archers imagined that they have completed their duty according to the
desire of Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). They all
broke in collecting the booty except Abdullah
bin Jabiir and
his only ten companions (archers) remained for the safety of the pass.
