Commentary
Jahda –
(to try hard), jahad means effort, attempt, diligence,
struggle. If this attempt is in such a way, in which one has to try with full
force and has to suffer from difficulty, it will be called jahad,
whereas normal effort will be called juhad. The word Jihad has
also been derived from it, which means “to strive, to attempt against any
person or group. It is called Mujahidah too, particularly,
effort against own evil wishes.
‘Ay-maanihim –
(oaths), it is plural of yamiin, which means “A solemn affirmation
made with a reverent appeal to God for its truth”. Jahda
‘ay-maanihim means “a solemn oath out of one’s own normal oaths”.
Although those people were idolaters, even then they used to believe that Allah
Almighty is the Greatest, and swearing a solemn oath of Allah was taken by them
as a very pure oath.
In the verse mentioned before
this, the Muslims were commanded that they should endure and have patience so
that the infidels do not irritate due to their opprobrious language and
indecency, and due to this reason, they begin to say that the Muslims are
outspoken and bad-tempered people. Their conversation is not able to be
accepted.
Therefore, there is a dire need
of being careful also that the way of everyone’s own is pleasing to him in the
world. It is very difficult for the human being to give up old habits, and he
has thousands of evasions not to leave those temperaments. So you should not
provide them one more pretext by vituperation. For instance:
The idolaters of Makkah used
to come unto the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace
be upon Him) and say: You declare that Messenger Moses (peace be upon Him) used
to make His stick a dragon, Messenger Jesus (peace be upon Him) used to animate
the dead body, any self-made (of mud) bird with His own puff, and describe many
other miracles of many other Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them). You
should bring forth also any such clear portent of Your Messenger-hood.
The Messenger (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon Him) asked: Which portent do you want to see? They
said: If not any other then; make this hill - Safaa of gold.
He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) said: Will you believe if
this hill becomes of gold? They said: We swear a solemn oath that we shall
believe.
Allah’s Messenger (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) desired to pray and the Muslims
requested Him too to pray. If they are guided accordingly, then the object will
be achieved. At that time, this verse was inspired. It is commanded: These
idolaters are swearing a solemn oath very earnestly that by Allah, if there
come unto them any such clear portent i.e. the hill of Safaa becomes of
gold, they will believe. And they said: We speak the truth that we shall accept
it that really You are a true Messenger. Who can deny such a clear and good
sign?
It has
been described already in the beginning of this Chapter (Surah) that the
idolaters of Makkah used to demand such portent which may not
be falsified, and these entire were impostures only. Natural reason of these
pretexts has been described here, from which, it is known: Why do they seek
ostensible pleas of different types for disbelieving. The only reason is that
their mind has become accustomed of bad habits and they consider that those
customs are best of all.
