176a. And had We willed
We would have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and
followed his own lust. Therefore his likeness is as the likeness of a dog; if
thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he
panteth with his tongue out.

Commentary
‘Akhlada – {(he) clung, inclined to}, it is past tense.
Its origin is ‘akhlaad, which has been derived from khalad.
Khaluud means – living forever. ‘Akhlada – to elect
forever, ‘akhlada ‘ilal-‘arzi (he liked to live in the
earth, that is to say; preferred the things of this world.
Yal-has – (he pants), the origin of this word is lahas,
which means “to breathe heavily and swiftly, to hang out the tongue as the dog
acts usually, so that the inner heat should come out and the fresh air enter
into body quickly, which is necessary for the worldly life.
It has been described in this
verse that the Revelations of Allah Almighty are sufficient for raising the
position of a mankind and can carry him at higher place of humanity by lifting
up from the platform of brutality, but every human being cannot reap advantage
from it. If his surroundings caused to forget the lesson of his nature and
despite the warning by Messengers (peace be upon Them) and having knowledge of
the Revelations of God Almighty, he does not incline towards it, then one
should understand that his bad habits will ruin him, and the Revelations of
Allah Almighty will not provide him any benefit. He has become slave of his own
desires. Apparent and casual pomp and show of worldly profit has inclined his
heart unto itself. His likeness is entirely like a dog, as according to his
habit; whether he lifts up a burden or is left without burden, he does not
leave panting. Similarly, following one’s own desires, this individual will
have evil habits, and whether he has been lifting up the burden of Knowledge or
otherwise, is equal. He will do what he wishes. Certainly he will do in
accordance with his nature.
Those people should learn from
it, who, despite being scholars and having knowledge of everything, do not care
for the Commands of Allah Almighty, and being attracted unto the world; they
begin to follow the commands of Satan. Their knowledge is not useful for them
and evil habits overcome upon them; too much that those become their second
nature.
There is a
hint in this verse that knowledge without practice is useless, on the contrary,
it becomes a light house for wicked deeds of the humankind. And he finds such
tricks by thinking for acquiring benefits of the world, which, illiterate
people can never think. If someone has any doubt in evil by means of science,
he should behold the Atom Bomb and think: Whether the Scientist has not cut the
ears of Satan by providing the equipment for destruction? This is a miracle of
modern knowledge and science.
